Free Word Imposter Game — Play in Your Browser, No Download Required
One player doesn't know the secret word. Everyone else does. Can you find the imposter before they blend in?
🎯 What Is the Imposter Game Online?
The Imposter Game is a free online social deduction word game for 3 to 20 players. One player is secretly chosen as the imposter. All other players receive the same secret word. Players take turns giving a single-word clue that relates to the word — without saying it directly. The imposter must fake their clue without knowing what the word is. After a few rounds, everyone votes on who they think is the imposter.
The game is sometimes also called Word Imposter, Guess the Imposter, Find the Imposter, or the online version of party games like Spyfall and Undercover. It works on any device — phone, tablet, or laptop — and requires zero downloads.
impostergames.online lets you play the imposter game instantly in your browser. Use our word generator to assign roles automatically, choose from 15+ word categories, enable hint mode, or enter your own custom words. Everything is free.

⚡ How the Imposter Word Game Works
1. Set Up
Choose your player count (3–20) and pick a word category. Select how many imposters to include — usually 1 for standard play.
2. Reveal Roles
Pass the phone to each player. Everyone taps to see their role privately. Most players see the secret word. The imposter sees nothing (or a hint if you enable it).
3. Give Clues
Each player says one word that relates to the secret word. The imposter must guess and bluff their way through without knowing the word.
4. Discuss & Vote
After 2–3 rounds of clues, everyone discusses. Point to — or call out — who you think is the imposter. The person with the most votes is eliminated.
5. Reveal & Score
Reveal the imposter. If the group guessed correctly, civilians win. If the imposter survived, they win — and earn a bonus point by guessing the secret word.
6. Play Again
Start a new round with a fresh word and a new imposter. Play as many rounds as you like. The more you play, the better the bluffing gets.

🧠 Tips and Strategies for Imposter Games
For Civilians: Give Specific but Not Obvious Clues
Your clue should be specific enough to confirm the word to other civilians, but not so obvious that the imposter immediately figures it out. If the word is "Pizza," saying "Italian" is better than "Food" — and far better than "Round."
For the Imposter: Listen Before You Guess
Don't give your clue first if you can help it. Wait to hear 2–3 clues from other players, then form a hypothesis. Your goal is to match the general tone, not to be perfectly accurate.
Watch for Hesitation
The biggest imposter tell is hesitation. If someone pauses longer than usual, repeats a clue someone else already used, or gives an unusually vague clue, these are red flags. Track who goes vague across multiple rounds.
Don't Vote Too Fast
A confident early accusation can pressure the group into voting incorrectly. Wait until 2 rounds of clues before committing. Often the imposter slips up in round 2 or 3.
Imposter Final Guess Strategy
If caught, you still get a chance to guess the word. By this point you've heard many clues, so look for the common thread. If you heard "dough," "topping," "sauce," and "delivery," the word is almost certainly "Pizza."
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Imposter Game online?
The Imposter Game online is a free browser-based social deduction word game. One player is secretly the imposter — they do not know the secret word. All other players do know the word and take turns giving one-word clues. At the end, everyone votes to identify the imposter. No app or download is required.
How do you play the Imposter Game?
First, choose a word category and set the number of players. One player is secretly assigned the imposter role. All other players see the secret word. Players take turns giving a single-word clue that relates to the word. After 2–3 rounds, everyone discusses and votes for who they think is the imposter. If the group guesses correctly, they win. If the imposter survives, the imposter wins.
Is the Imposter Game free?
Yes. The Imposter Game on impostergames.online is completely free to play. No account, no download, and no payment required.
How many players can play the Imposter Game?
The Imposter Game works best with 4 to 10 players, but you can play with as few as 3 players. With just 2 players the social deduction becomes trivial since there is only one possible suspect. For very large groups of 15 or more, you can add a second imposter.
Can you play the Imposter Game on one phone?
Yes. Pass-and-play mode lets everyone share a single device. Each player taps to reveal their role privately, then passes the phone to the next player. This is the most common way to play in person.
What happens if the imposter is caught?
If the group votes correctly and catches the imposter, the civilians win. In many variations, the caught imposter gets one final chance: if they can correctly guess the secret word, they earn a point despite being eliminated.
Can the imposter win?
Yes. The imposter wins by surviving all voting rounds without being identified. The imposter can also win a bonus point by correctly guessing the secret word after being caught.
What are good words for the Imposter Game?
The best imposter game words are common enough for everyone to know but interesting enough to generate varied clues. Good categories include food, animals, movies, sports, and places. Avoid words that are too obvious (like "dog" in an animals round) or too obscure that players cannot form clues.
What is the hint mode in the Imposter Game?
In hint mode, the imposter is shown a related hint word instead of seeing nothing. For example, if the secret word is "Pizza," the imposter might see "Italian food" as a hint. This makes the game slightly easier for the imposter and creates more interesting bluffing scenarios.
What is the question mode in the Imposter Game?
In question mode, instead of giving one-word clues, each player answers a question related to the secret word. For example, "What would you find at a birthday party?" Players write or say their answers, and the group then discusses which answer seems off to find the imposter.
Can you use custom words in the Imposter Game?
Yes. You can enter your own custom words or phrases to create a personalized word pack. This is great for themed parties, classroom lessons, or inside jokes with friends.
What is the difference between Imposter and Spyfall?
In Spyfall, the spy does not know the secret location while everyone else does. In the Imposter Word Game, the imposter does not know the secret word. Both are social deduction games, but the Imposter Word Game is simpler to set up, works without a board or cards, and plays faster.
