Imposter Game with Hint: How Hint Mode Works and When to Use It
Hint mode is an optional setting in the Imposter Word Game that gives the imposter a category clue instead of leaving them completely in the dark. This guide covers how hint mode works, the official hint rules, strategy tips for the imposter and civilians, and when to enable or disable it.
💡 What Is Hint Mode in the Imposter Game?
In the standard Imposter Word Game, the imposter sees nothing — not the word, not the category. This is the hardest version of the game for the imposter, especially in small groups where there are only a few clues to work from.
When hint mode is turned on, the imposter receives a brief category or theme hint. For example: if the secret word is "Sushi," the imposter's screen shows "Hint: Food" or "Hint: Japanese Food." The imposter still does not see the actual word, but the hint gives them a general direction to base their bluffing on.
⚙️ How to Turn On Hint Mode
- Scroll to the game generator on this page (or open the home page for the same tool).
- Before tapping "Start Game," check the box labeled 💡 Show hint to imposter.
- The imposter will now see a hint category on their reveal screen instead of a blank role card.
- All other game rules remain the same — civilians still see the full secret word.

📋 Hint Mode Rules
- • The hint is always a category or theme (e.g., "Food", "Animal", "Place") — never the exact word.
- • Civilians are not told whether hint mode is on. This is intentional — it prevents civilians from adjusting their clue strategy.
- • The imposter may not announce that they received a hint.
- • All clue-giving and voting rules remain unchanged from the standard game.
- • Hint mode is recommended for groups of 3–4 players, where the imposter has very few clues to work from.
🧠 Imposter Strategy with Hint Mode
🎯 Start Broad, Then Narrow
Your first clue should be broad enough to fit multiple things within the category. If your hint is "Animal," try clues like "Wild" or "Fast" on your first turn. After hearing others, narrow your next clue toward the specific animal you suspect the word to be.
👂 Let Others Go First
If you're not the first to give a clue, use that time well. Listen to 2–3 clues before your turn and look for the common thread. Once you think you've narrowed it down, give a clue that fits naturally — neither too vague nor too specific.
🎭 Mimic Confidence Levels
Notice how confidently civilians give their clues. Civilians who know the word often deliver their clue quickly and assuredly. Match that energy — hesitation is the biggest imposter tell even in hint mode.
🔍 Use Subcategory Hints
If the hint is "Food" and you hear clues like "Italy," "Oven," and "Cheese," you can confidently narrow the word to something like "Pizza" or "Lasagna." Your next clue — "Slice" — will sound authoritative.
👥 Civilian Strategy Against a Hinted Imposter
When hint mode is on, the imposter is harder to catch because their early clues will be plausibly in the right category. Here is how civilians can still identify them:
- • Watch for category-level clues instead of word-level clues. A civilian who knows the word "Sushi" says "Chopsticks." The imposter who only knows "Food" says "Tasty." The depth of specificity differs.
- • Ask a follow-up question during discussion. "Why did you choose that clue?" A civilian can explain easily. An imposter often gives a vague or circular explanation.
- • Compare clues across rounds. If someone gives "Flavor" in round 1 and "Delicious" in round 2, both category-level clues, they may be working from a hint rather than the word.
❓ Hint Mode FAQ
How many players can play the Imposter Game?
The Imposter Game works best with 4 to 10 players, but you can play with as few as 3 players. With just 2 players the social deduction becomes trivial since there is only one possible suspect. For very large groups of 15 or more, you can add a second imposter.
Can the imposter win?
Yes. The imposter wins by surviving all voting rounds without being identified. The imposter can also win a bonus point by correctly guessing the secret word after being caught.
What is the hint mode in the Imposter Game?
In hint mode, the imposter is shown a related hint word instead of seeing nothing. For example, if the secret word is "Pizza," the imposter might see "Italian food" as a hint. This makes the game slightly easier for the imposter and creates more interesting bluffing scenarios.
